Bangladesh'S Garment Export Is Affected By The US Market
In the past fiscal year (2011-12), ready-made clothing in Bangladesh clothing The export revenue to the United States showed a negative growth, although the clothing sector achieved a growth rate of 0.85% in the 2010-11 fiscal year, official data show.
According to the data of Bangladesh Export Promotion Bureau, in the just ended fiscal year, Bangladesh's clothing exports to the US market reached 4.553 billion US dollars, and the export volume of 2010-2011 fiscal year was 4.63 billion US dollars.
Professor Rahman, executive director of the Bangladesh Policy Dialogue Center, said: "At present, the economic conditions in the United States are not very good. Therefore, the demand for garment projects has declined."
He suggested that the government send diplomatic missions abroad to actively promote national exports.
Professor Rahman hopes that the export orders of ready-made garments can grow rapidly, which will contribute to reversing the recession in Bangladesh.
Muhiuddin, president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, said that although the United States is the largest market for Bangladesh's ready to wear clothing, its exports to the United States have not expanded. For Bangladesh, this is a warning. The global economic downturn and high unemployment should be responsible for the decline in exports.
Muhiuddin expressed concern that the recent export may decline again. He said that 25% of the total garment exports went to the US market. In the past few months, Vietnam's share in the US market has expanded significantly, but Bangladesh has failed to do so.
